A dramatic epic story of assimilation, patriotism and prejudice in America. Kaufman and Hart’s most serious play, The American Way galvanized audiences at the large Century Theater in Rockefeller Center in the last days of the 1930s; it starred Frederic March as the leading character.
By George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. Cast size: 15 men, 12 women, 7 interiors. Premiered on October 22, 1932 at the Music Box Theatre. It received rave reviews and ran 232 performances.
Strike Up the Band opened on January 14, 1930 at the Times Square Theater and ran 191 performances. In 1990, the 1927 book was restored, in collaboration with a Nonesuch/Roxbury recording of all the variants of both versions. The 1927 version was staged by ENCORES! at City Center in 2000 and that version is available for performance.
