ARCHIVAL COLLECTION
Rare Handbills from Broadway’s Golden Age
For most of the decades before World War II (and a little after)—in the days before Facebook and the Internet—when Broadway producers wanted to advertise their shows, they printed colorful handbills which could be found in hotel lobbies or drug stores or ticket offices. Because of their intentional disposability, they are very rare.
Luckily, in the collection of Anne Kaufman, George Kaufman’s daughter, we have found some of the most colorful and informative handbills of all his plays—graphics, photos, and reviews. They are a treasure trove of theatrical history.
